The Algebra IOWA Test Series are achievement tests published by the University of Iowa and are part of the “The Iowa Testing Programs.” The two most commonly-given Iowa Tests are the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Iowa Assessments. The Iowa Assessments is a group-administered achievement test for grades K-12 which measures a student’s knowledge in subject areas that students have learned in school – reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The Iowa Assessments were released in the 2011-2012 school year and has replaced the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and Iowa Test of Educational Development. The new exam format has been redesigned to better align the exam with the Iowa Common Core Standards. The test is also better aligned with other state standardized tests such as the Smarter Balanced Assessment exam. Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test™ (IAAT™), Fifth Edition, assesses students’ readiness for Algebra I, including any additional support and intervention they may need to become successful in the algebra classroom. IAAT is a group-administered, 50-minute algebra placement exam designed for grades 7 and 8 but is suitable for accelerated students in lower grades and high school and junior college students. Scoring options include hand scoring, or central scoring through Riverside Scoring Service. The following features set IAAT apart: The same high standards of reliability and validity as Iowa Assessments™ Forms E, F, and G. Two parallel forms enabling pre- and post-testing. Central scoring is available through Riverside Scoring Service for timely and accurate results. Alignment to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards, ensuring that skills assessed are relevant to today’s algebra curriculum. Test Format The Iowa Assessments exam has 10 core sections – reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, vocabulary, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and computation. At the 3rd grade level and below, two additional subtests are given in word analysis and listening. The number of questions on the Iowa Assessments exam ranges from 270-340 depending on grade level.
